Evergreen county experiences

The basin is about eighty-two feet across and twenty-five feet deep, and a run of roughly a hundred feet carries the water down to the river. That single spring supplies close to a quarter of the Withlacoochee's flow, which gives some idea of the volume: a first-magnitude spring moves at least two thousand eight hundred liters every second.
The sculptor Walter Russell made the Four Freedoms statue in 1941, the year President Roosevelt set out the four freedoms in his State of the Union address: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Four angels on the monument stand for them.
The forest is not one block of ground but a string of pieces scattered across Madison, Hamilton and Suwannee counties, bought to protect the riverbanks and the springs that feed into them. The named tracts include Anderson Springs, Mill Creek South, Black, Damascus, Ellaville, Nekoosa, Withlacoochee, Blue Springs Longleaf, Chitty Bend West and East, Hardee Springs, Westwood East and West, Sullivan and Deese.
Treasures of Madison County, Incorporated was set up to keep the county's history from being scattered, and it opened its first museum in the renovated old jail in 1998. That same year it acquired the W.
Two settlements stood on this ground and neither survives. Columbus was founded in 1841 and lived on riverboat traffic; its cemetery, begun in 1860, still holds twenty-three graves under stones of several different materials. Ellaville was a sawmill town built by George Drew, later governor of Florida, and it cut timber that went out by river and rail.
The name has changed but the place and the facilities have not, so anyone who remembers it as Jellystone will recognize it. Jimmie and Latrelle Ragans own and run it. The water side is the reason families come: a sixty-foot waterslide, a lazy river and a zero-entry swimming pool, which is more than most campgrounds in north Florida offer.
It follows the old Valdosta and Southern Railroad right of way for most of its length, which is why it is straight, level and well shaded in places. The southern end is at East Livingston Street and State Road 145 at Northeast Rocky Ford Road in Madison; the northern end is at the river on the state boundary, where there are picnic tables, a shelter and a spot to look out over the water.
