Twin Rivers State Forest
Madison County · North Florida & First Coast
Fourteen thousand eight hundred and eighty-two acres in fifteen separate tracts along the Suwannee and Withlacoochee rivers.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The forest is not one block of ground but a string of pieces scattered across Madison, Hamilton and Suwannee counties, bought to protect the riverbanks and the springs that feed into them. The named tracts include Anderson Springs, Mill Creek South, Black, Damascus, Ellaville, Nekoosa, Withlacoochee, Blue Springs Longleaf, Chitty Bend West and East, Hardee Springs, Westwood East and West, Sullivan and Deese. Ellaville is the only one that fronts both rivers, which is why it gets most of the visitors. What grows on them ranges from planted pine being worked back toward longleaf, to hardwood bottomland and river bluff. Trails run through the larger tracts for walking, cycling and riding, and primitive campsites can be reserved. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages hunting across the forest as the Twin Rivers Wildlife Management Area, so check the season dates before setting out on foot. Fishing and paddling access is the other main use
