Treasures of Madison County Museum

Madison County · North Florida & First Coast

The county museum and genealogical library in Madison, run by a local nonprofit formed in 1995.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Treasures of Madison County, Incorporated was set up to keep the county's history from being scattered, and it opened its first museum in the renovated old jail in 1998. That same year it acquired the W. T. Davis Building, formerly the W. T. Davis Opera House, which is now the main home of the collection. The holdings began with American naval officer uniforms and have grown through periodic archive days, when families bring in photographs and documents to be copied and recorded. Enough came in that the organization published Photographic Treasures of Madison County, Volume One, in 2004. Alongside the exhibits is a genealogical library, and that is the part that brings people from out of state: anyone tracing a family through this part of north Florida will find the county records, family papers and photograph files gathered in one room. It is volunteer-run, so hours are limited and telephoning before a visit is the sensible course
