Four Freedoms Trail

Madison County · North Florida & First Coast

Twelve and a third miles of paved trail running north from Madison to the Withlacoochee River at the Georgia line.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It follows the old Valdosta and Southern Railroad right of way for most of its length, which is why it is straight, level and well shaded in places. The southern end is at East Livingston Street and State Road 145 at Northeast Rocky Ford Road in Madison; the northern end is at the river on the state boundary, where there are picnic tables, a shelter and a spot to look out over the water. In between it runs through farmland and stretches of canopy, crossing the state road and passing through the small settlements of Hanson and Pinetta; Pinetta has a market and a barbecue place and public restrooms beside the trail, which matters on a long ride. Parking is at the roadside on State Road 145 near County Road 591, on the west side near Aster Road at Hanson, and at Pinetta near Northeast Mount Horeb Road. Four bodies share the management: the county, the water management district, the Office of Greenways and Trails, and the state transportation department
