Four Freedoms Park

Madison County · North Florida & First Coast

The shaded square in the middle of downtown Madison, built around a monument that began its life in Madison Square Garden.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The sculptor Walter Russell made the Four Freedoms statue in 1941, the year President Roosevelt set out the four freedoms in his State of the Union address: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Four angels on the monument stand for them. It was unveiled in 1943 in Madison Square Garden in front of sixty thousand people, dedicated to Captain Colin P. Kelly Junior, one of the first Americans recognized as a hero of the Second World War, who came from this town. It was then brought here and rededicated on June 14, 1944, with Governor Spessard Holland among those who spoke. The park around it holds several other monuments recording parts of the county's history, set among old live oaks hung with Spanish moss and beds of azaleas. It is the center of the town in the plain sense: the place Madison holds its events and the place people cut across on foot
