GARDENS & LANDSCAPES

Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens

The Sanford Municipal Zoo started in 1923 with animals donated to the local fire department, moved twice, and settled at the present site beside Lake Monroe on July 4, 1975, with Jack Hanna as its first director there. It covers 116 acres and keeps about 400 animals across roughly 100 species, and has held accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1986.

FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Black Bear Wilderness Area

This is one of the better pieces of natural land in Seminole County and one of the more demanding walks near Orlando. The full loop runs 7.1 miles along levees through the floodplain of the St. Johns River, graded moderate to difficult, with steep slippery grades in places, and there are no shortcuts or bailout points once a hiker commits to it.

PARKS & OUTDOORS

Big Tree Park

The Senator was a bald cypress dating to roughly 1550 before the common era, 125 feet tall with a trunk over eleven feet across, and it was the largest and oldest of its kind in the world. Seminole people and others before them used it as a landmark.

WATER & COAST

Lake Jesup Wilderness Area

The trailhead is at 5951 South Sanford Avenue, and the trails run out across the floodplain between the Sanford edge and Lake Jesup. Four miles of looping track carry walkers, off-road cyclists and horses through ground that shifts every few hundred yards, from hammock so dense it feels like jungle, cabbage palm and oak overhead, out into open marsh prairie with nothing above it.

WATER & COAST

Spring Hammock Preserve

The preserve covers about 1,500 acres of low wet ground between Longwood and Lake Jesup, and the mix of habitat in it is unusually wide: hydric hammock and floodplain forest on the mucky parts, upland hardwood and pine flatwoods where the sand rises. A number of the plants and animals here are rare or sitting at the edge of their range, which is what happens where two kinds of country meet.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Museum of Seminole County History

The building at 300 Bush Boulevard in Sanford went up in 1926 as the Seminole County Home, what an earlier generation called a poor farm: a place where the county housed the elderly and destitute who had no family to take them. It went on the National Register of Historic Places on June 10, 1999, and now holds the Museum of Seminole County History.

HISTORY & HERITAGE

Fort Mellon Park

The park takes its name from the fort the United States Army built on this shore in 1837 during the Second Seminole War, named for Captain Charles Mellon, who was killed in an attack on it. The town of Sanford grew up around that ground afterward.

WATER & COAST

Wekiva Island

Wekiva Island sits at 1014 Miami Springs Drive in Longwood, about twenty minutes from downtown Orlando, on the Wekiva River, which carries a federal Wild and Scenic designation. The river is spring-fed, clear and slow, and the paddling is easy enough for families.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Sanford Museum

The museum opened in 1957 as the Henry Shelton Sanford Memorial Library and Museum, and expanded in 1974 and again in 1993. Sanford was a diplomat and businessman, United States minister to Belgium during the Civil War, who bought land on Lake Monroe and laid out the town that carries his name.
