WATER & COAST

Wekiva Island

Seminole County · Central Florida

A riverside outfitter and gathering place on the Wekiva River at Longwood, with kayaks, a bar and a boardwalk over the water.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Wekiva Island sits at 1014 Miami Springs Drive in Longwood, about twenty minutes from downtown Orlando, on the Wekiva River, which carries a federal Wild and Scenic designation. The river is spring-fed, clear and slow, and the paddling is easy enough for families. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are rented by the half day or the full day, first come and first served with no reservations, and life vests come with them. What makes the place different from an ordinary launch is everything on the bank: a boardwalk along the river, cabanas for the day or for events, the Without a Paddle Cafe and the Tooting Otter craft beer and wine bar. Sustainability is worked into the buildings and there is an education center on site. Five dollars a head is charged at peak times, and it fills quickly in summer. Hours run to eleven at night on Fridays and Saturdays
