Sanford Museum
Seminole County · Central Florida
The city museum of Sanford, holding the papers and possessions of Henry Shelton Sanford, the diplomat who founded the town.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The museum opened in 1957 as the Henry Shelton Sanford Memorial Library and Museum, and expanded in 1974 and again in 1993. Sanford was a diplomat and businessman, United States minister to Belgium during the Civil War, who bought land on Lake Monroe and laid out the town that carries his name. The Sanford Family Collection holds his library and papers along with European and American paintings, furniture and personal effects dating between 1820 and 1890, which is an unusual depth of material for a city museum. The Chase Gallery, added in 1993, covers local history: the railroads, the riverboats on the St. Johns, the celery farming that made the town's money, and the institutions that grew with it. A sports collection covers Sanford people including the broadcaster Red Barber, Tim Raines, David Eckstein, Jeff Blake and Drew Bundini Brown, who trained Muhammad Ali. It opens Tuesday through Saturday from nine to five at 520 East First Street
