Fort Mellon Park
Seminole County · Central Florida
Sanford's waterfront park on Lake Monroe, on the site of the fort the army built here during the Second Seminole War.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The park takes its name from the fort the United States Army built on this shore in 1837 during the Second Seminole War, named for Captain Charles Mellon, who was killed in an attack on it. The town of Sanford grew up around that ground afterward. What stands there now is a city park at 600 East First Street with the lake in front of it. There is a multi-generational playground, a splash pad that is heavily used in summer, eight shaded pavilions that can be rented for parties, and a riverside pathway with benches looking out over the water. An amphitheater carries concerts and community events, and the park is where Sanford holds its Fourth of July gathering. The RiverWalk runs straight through it, so the park is both a destination and a stop on a longer walk. It sits at the edge of the historic downtown, a short walk from the shops and restaurants on First Street
