Museum of Seminole County History
Seminole County · Central Florida
The county's history museum in the 1926 Seminole County Home, the building that once housed people with nowhere else to go.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The building at 300 Bush Boulevard in Sanford went up in 1926 as the Seminole County Home, what an earlier generation called a poor farm: a place where the county housed the elderly and destitute who had no family to take them. It went on the National Register of Historic Places on June 10, 1999, and now holds the Museum of Seminole County History. The exhibits run through the region's past in the order it happened, starting with the Native people who were here first, then the early settlers and the military posts of the Seminole wars, then the railroads and the steamboats that worked Lake Monroe and the St. Johns, and then the agriculture and industry that followed them, celery above all, which made Sanford's money for decades. Antiques and artifacts from local families fill the rooms. The building itself is part of the exhibit, and the county runs it
