Little Big Econ State Forest

Seminole County · Central Florida

Just over 5,000 acres along the Econlockhatchee River east of Oviedo, with bluffs above the water that Florida is not supposed to have.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The forest covers 5,048 acres about three miles east of Oviedo and was established in 1990. Its name comes from the two rivers running through it, the Econlockhatchee and the Little Econlockhatchee, and the Econ is designated an Outstanding Florida Water. What surprises people is the terrain. The river has cut into sand ridges here, so the trail runs along genuine bluffs twenty or thirty feet above the water, with live oaks leaning out over it, which is not the Florida most visitors picture. The Florida National Scenic Trail passes through and uses the southern section. The Flagler Trail follows an old railroad grade, and the pilings of the old trestle still stand in the river. Twelve miles of single-track, known as Snow Hill, carry mountain bikes. Paddling the Econ is a common day trip. Camping is primitive only, with permits for canoeists. Picnicking, birding, fishing, hunting and horseback riding are all allowed on the forest, which is managed for use rather than kept untouched
