Sanford RiverWalk

Seminole County · Central Florida

Nearly five miles of paved waterfront path along the south shore of Lake Monroe at Sanford, built in three phases.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The RiverWalk runs along the southern shore of Lake Monroe through the city of Sanford, and it is the reason the town turned back toward its water. Phase one opened in 2004, running 1.2 miles from Mellonville Avenue to French Avenue. Phase two extended it to Mangoustine Avenue in 2018. Phase three connected it onward to the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail, the 210-mile route linking St. Petersburg to the Space Coast, and completed a 26-mile loop around Lake Monroe. The work included new roadways, roundabouts, lighting, landscaping and seawalls to hold the shoreline against erosion, and the International Making Cities Livable organization recognized the design in 2009. The path passes Fort Mellon Park, the marina and the historic downtown, and the lake is wide enough that the far shore is a low line on the horizon. Sunset from the walk is the reason locals use it in the evening, looking west down the lake
