Complete Florida county guide
Rolling terrain, large lakes, historic downtowns and expanding communities connect old Florida character with the western Orlando growth corridor.
Start with daily life
Lake County combines Clermont's western Orlando growth corridor, Mount Dora's historic downtown, the government and lakefront centers of Tavares and Leesburg, and large rural and conservation areas. Rolling terrain and hundreds of lakes give the county a different physical character from much of Central Florida.
Healthcare, education, government, construction, logistics, tourism and small business support the local economy, while many households connect to Orange or Sumter County. Florida's Turnpike, U.S. 27, U.S. 441 and SR 429 are essential, but the surface-road trip to an interchange often determines whether a commute works.
Compare a south or east Lake option with a central or north Lake option. Drive the full route toward Orlando or The Villages, verify hospital and school access, and check drainage, floodplain, sinkhole history, well or septic service and future development for the exact property.
The numbers that matter if you are moving
U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, published January 2026, read September 19, 2026. Survey figures are estimates; median home value is what owners estimate their home is worth, not a sale price.

These are starting points, not a ranking. Add nearby towns and neighborhoods as you learn your daily route and housing priorities.
Clermont is a fast-growing south Lake city with hills, lakes, newer communities and strong access toward Orlando through U.S. 27, SR 429 and the Turnpike. Test peak travel to the actual job center and include association, district and construction conditions in newer areas.
Mount Dora offers a compact historic downtown, arts and lakefront character near eastern Lake County. Compare walkable in-town neighborhoods with outlying addresses, then test routes toward Orlando, Sanford or local healthcare.
Leesburg is an established regional service and healthcare center near the Harris Chain of Lakes and The Villages. Distinguish city, retirement-community and rural options, and verify the route to the chosen medical network and employment corridor.
Tavares is the county seat and a lakefront government center between Mount Dora and Leesburg. Review city services, shoreline or flood conditions and U.S. 441 travel while comparing older neighborhoods with nearby growth.

The regional pattern is a starting point. Verify the answer for the exact city, neighborhood and property you are considering.
01Clermont, Mount Dora, Leesburg and Tavares offer different combinations of growth, history, healthcare and regional access. The right center depends on the weekly routine.
VERIFY LOCALLY BEFORE YOU COMMIT
02Healthcare, government, education, construction and services create local jobs, while the Orlando and Villages corridors expand the employment map for some households.

04The Turnpike, U.S. 27, U.S. 441 and SR 429 help regional movement, yet local two-lane and suburban roads can add substantial time. Drive the whole trip.

Evergreen county experiences
Use enduring natural, historic and cultural places to understand the area beyond a real-estate showing.
David Simpson and his family settled here in 1874. The postmaster first called the place Royellou, after his three children Roy, Ella and Louis, and it was renamed for Dora Ann Drawdy, an early settler whose name the lake had already carried since 1846.
Five named lakes sit inside it, Lake Louisa, Hammond, Dixie, Dude and Bear, with smaller ones besides, and Lake Louisa itself is where the Palatlakaha River starts. The ground is rolling by Florida standards, sand hills dropping to water, with bald cypress, live oak and saw palmetto through it.
The islands are not natural. They were spoil piles in a marshy cove, built up in 1925 so that boats could dock there, and in 1936 men working for the Works Progress Administration planted the first ornamental beds on them.
It opened in February 1989. What grows here is a mixture of native and imported: the muscadine varieties Noble, Carlos and Welder, which are the grapes that actually thrive in this climate, alongside Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
It opened in 1964 as the House of Presidents. John and Jan Zweifel bought it in the 1990s and renamed it. John had been building miniatures of historic buildings since he was a boy; after marrying Jan in 1959 the couple made a living from Christmas displays and exhibits before moving to central Florida in the 1970s.
The drive opens Friday, Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays, from seven in the morning until three, with everyone out by five. The speed limit is ten miles an hour, vehicles over twenty-five feet and trailers are not allowed, and the whole thing takes one to three hours depending on how often you stop.
The Oklawaha Valley Audubon Society founded it in 1988 as a private preserve run for public education, and that is still what it is. About 1.4 miles of trail thread through it under names that tell you what you are walking through: the Lazy Oak Trail, the Bobcat Boardwalk, the Haselton, Armadillo and Little Armadillo trails, the Adventure Trail, the Grandfather Oak Trail and the Gunkel Trail.
Florida has only a small number of first-magnitude springs and this is among the easiest of them to get into: the basin has a gently sloping sand beach running down into clear water that holds at seventy-two degrees whatever the season. Divers go down to the broad mouth of the spring itself.
The loop is 2.1 miles with about 130 feet of climb and descent in it, which in Florida counts as hill walking and will surprise anyone expecting flat. From the high sections the view opens across Lake Apopka, the fourth largest lake in the state.
The argument the collection makes is that a chair or a staircase can be a work of art on the same terms as a painting. Wharton Esherick, called the dean of American craftsmen, is the earlier of the two figures it is built around; he carried the Arts and Crafts movement through into postwar furniture design, and his Spiral Stair, which stood at the 1940 World's Fair, is the centerpiece here.
A. W. Thacker and F.
The Antique Center sits on the south side: a building of forty thousand square feet, air conditioned, with more than 180 booths inside, consignment cases, and an outdoor Street of Shops. The Flea and Farmer's Market is on the north side, with over a hundred indoor booths, four hundred outdoor pavilion spaces and more open-air dealers beyond that.
It was a natural passage between the two lakes before it was widened, deepened and straightened in the late 1880s so that paddlewheel boats could carry freight through, a trade that lasted until the railroads arrived in the 1890s. What survived the dredging is the thing people come for: bald cypress hundreds of years old standing on both banks with their knees breaking the surface, the branches closing overhead so that the light comes down green.
It opened in October 2014 and was joined to the Lake Apopka Loop Trail the following year. From the tower the view runs out over Lake Apopka, the fourth largest lake in Florida, and on a clear day the Orlando skyline stands up on the far side of it.
