A chain of landscaped islands on Lake Harris at 201 East Dixie Avenue, Leesburg.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The islands are not natural. They were spoil piles in a marshy cove, built up in 1925 so that boats could dock there, and in 1936 men working for the Works Progress Administration planted the first ornamental beds on them. What grew out of that is a park you walk through on bridges, island to island, with the lake on both sides most of the way. A loop of 1.1 miles runs through it on concrete and asphalt paths, flat and accessible, with benches placed for watching the water and the birds. There are floating docks on the lake, a waterfront picnic pavilion with grills, and restrooms at the trailhead. Admission is free. It opens at sunrise and closes at eleven at night, which is later than most Florida parks and makes it usable on a summer evening. Leashed dogs are welcome. The City of Leesburg runs it and answers on 352-728-9885
