WATER & COAST

Lake Placid Murals

Lake Placid has more than 40 murals painted on its downtown buildings and through the rest of the town, showing the history, the work and the odd facts of this part of Florida. A mural guide is handed out so visitors can find them all, and walking the route is the way most people see the town.

FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Archbold Biological Station

Richard Archbold set up Archbold Biological Station in 1941 near Lake Placid, after the Second World War cut short his zoological work in New Guinea. It covers 5,192.63 acres of Highlands County on the Lake Wales Ridge, which was an island chain when the sea was higher and is now a strip of ancient scrub running down the middle of the peninsula.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum

The depot at 12 East Park Street was finished in 1927 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, built in a plain masonry style as a passenger and freight station on the Haines City to Everglades City line. Passenger trains ran until the mid-1950s and freight kept using the line into the 1970s.

WATER & COAST

Lake Istokpoga

Lake Istokpoga covers 26,762.9 acres in Highlands County, which makes it the fifth largest lake in Florida. It runs about ten miles long and five miles wide. What surprises people is the depth: the average is only four feet and the deepest point is ten, so a storm turns it dangerous very quickly and local boaters watch the sky rather than the clock.

GARDENS & LANDSCAPES

Secret Gardens Winery & Farm

Secret Gardens Winery and Farm is at 8222 West Josephine Road in Sebring, on 33 acres run by one family. The wines are muscadine and fruit wines rather than the grape varieties most people expect, which is the practical choice in Florida: muscadine is native to the southeast, handles the heat and humidity, and resists the diseases that kill European vines here.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Toby's Clown School & Museum

Keith Stokes, known as Toby, moved to Lake Placid and started visiting hospital patients in costume. He taught his first clown class in 1993, and in 1995 the group was chartered by Clowns of America International as Toby's Clown Alley number 296.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Children's Museum of the Highlands

The Children's Museum of the Highlands is at 219 North Ridgewood Drive in downtown Sebring. It is built for children between one and twelve, and the idea behind it is plainly stated: that children learn through play, and that a place which lets them be creative and use their imagination gives them a liking for learning that lasts.
