Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum
Highlands County · Central Florida
The 1927 Atlantic Coast Line depot at Lake Placid, now a museum with a caboose outside and a steam excursion that still calls here.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The depot at 12 East Park Street was finished in 1927 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, built in a plain masonry style as a passenger and freight station on the Haines City to Everglades City line. Passenger trains ran until the mid-1950s and freight kept using the line into the 1970s. The building went into the National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1993. The Lake Placid Historical Society, founded in 1982, runs it as the Depot Museum, keeping the stories, objects and traditions of the town. Historic railroad equipment stands on the site, including a caboose, and the Sugar Express steam excursion still calls here, which means the building occasionally does the job it was built for. The society runs a program recording interviews with long-time residents, so the local memory is being written down while the people who hold it are still here, and it holds craft workshops in the museum. It opens Wednesday through Saturday from 10 to 3, and by appointment
