Lake Placid Murals

Highlands County · Central Florida

More than 40 painted murals through a small town that also grows most of the world's caladium bulbs.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Lake Placid has more than 40 murals painted on its downtown buildings and through the rest of the town, showing the history, the work and the odd facts of this part of Florida. A mural guide is handed out so visitors can find them all, and walking the route is the way most people see the town. The place was called Lake Stearns until Dr. Melvil Dewey, the man who invented the Dewey Decimal System, bought a good deal of land here and persuaded the town to take the name of his Lake Placid Club in New York. The other thing this town is known for is caladiums: it calls itself the Caladium Capital of the World and grows about 90 percent of the world's caladium bulbs, with an annual festival for it that brings competitions, entertainment and an antique car show. The American Clown Museum and School is here too. In 2013 Reader's Digest named Lake Placid the most interesting town in America, which for a place this size is worth the drive to see
