Evergreen county experiences

Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton bought eighty acres of hammock here in 1922, meaning to plant citrus, and worked out fairly quickly that what they had was worth more left standing. McKee Jungle Gardens ran for decades as one of the attractions people stopped for on the drive down the coast.
Plume hunters were shooting the birds off this island for the hat trade. Paul Kroegel, a German immigrant boat builder who lived across the water and watched it happen, took to standing guard with a shotgun, and the campaign he became part of reached the president.
The park covers 760 acres in total and was created on August 12, 1970, with the state completing the land purchase the following year. The Indian River side holds the campground, the boat ramp and the McLarty Treasure Museum, and it is the quieter end.
It was founded in 1988 to teach people about the lagoon, which is the most biologically diverse estuary in North America and also one of the most troubled, and the teaching is the whole point of the place rather than a sideline. Miles of boardwalk run out through mangrove and hammock.
It started as the Center for the Arts, under an Alliance for the Arts formed in 1978, and took its present name in 2002. The building has grown three times: an expansion in 1999 that doubled it, the Alice and Jim Beckwith Sculpture Park in 2007, and a covered atrium with a twenty-thousand-square-foot exhibitions wing between 2011 and 2012.
Eleven ships sailing for Spain went down in a hurricane off this coast in July 1715, carrying silver and gold from the New World. Around fifteen hundred people got ashore alive and made camp on this ground while salvage crews worked the wrecks offshore for the next several years.
State Road A1A divides it from its companion, Round Island Riverside Park, on the lagoon side, and the pair are usually treated as one destination. On the ocean side the beach is wide, with covered pavilions and grills, a playground and restrooms behind it.
It opened on January 1, 1948, in buildings put up as Navy housing during the war, next to the naval air station. Branch Rickey wanted a training camp the Dodgers could run entirely themselves, and a Vero Beach businessman named Bud Holman showed him this site.
It is described as the largest professional theater in Florida, and for a county of this size that is the surprising part: a town of Vero Beach's population supporting a producing house rather than only a road stop for tours. The season carries touring musicals, productions for children, comedy and lecture programs, with names people recognize.
Indian River citrus is a name that means something in the trade. The narrow band of sandy soil along this lagoon, with the water moderating the cold on both sides, produces grapefruit and oranges that have been sold under the Indian River label since the industry began, and the district is defined in law rather than by marketing.
