FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Jackie Robinson Training Complex
Indian River County · Atlantic Coast
The old Dodgertown at Vero Beach, renamed by Major League Baseball on April 2, 2019.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It opened on January 1, 1948, in buildings put up as Navy housing during the war, next to the naval air station. Branch Rickey wanted a training camp the Dodgers could run entirely themselves, and a Vero Beach businessman named Bud Holman showed him this site. The reason it mattered goes beyond baseball. On March 31, 1948, the Dodgers played Montreal here with Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella on the field, the first integrated spring training exhibition game in the South. By 1962 the housing, the dining and the facilities were fully integrated, seven years before the Vero Beach public schools were. Holman Stadium opened on March 11, 1953, seats five thousand, and has fifty royal palms standing beyond the outfield. The Dodgers trained here for sixty seasons and played their last spring game on March 17, 2008, before moving to Arizona. Major League Baseball took the site over in December 2018
