Sebastian Inlet State Park

Indian River County · Atlantic Coast

The southern half of a state park that straddles the Indian River and Brevard county line at the inlet.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The park covers 760 acres in total and was created on August 12, 1970, with the state completing the land purchase the following year. The Indian River side holds the campground, the boat ramp and the McLarty Treasure Museum, and it is the quieter end. Fishing jetties run out from both sides of the inlet into the Atlantic, and the current through the cut is strong enough that the jetty fishing is the reason many people come. Surfers work the breaks on the north side, First Peak and Monster Hole among them, which is why this stretch of coast produced a run of competitive surfers. The lagoon side is flat water for kayaking, with manatees through the cooler months. A Spanish treasure fleet went down off this shore in 1715, and the ground where the survivors camped is inside the park, listed on the National Register on the same day the park was created
