Evergreen county experiences

Lake Okeechobee covers roughly 730 square miles, which makes it the largest freshwater lake in Florida, and it averages about nine feet deep, which is remarkably shallow for something that size. The name comes from the Hitchiti language spoken by the ancestors of the Seminole: oki for water and chubi for big.
Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area covers 18,272 acres in Glades County, running from Palmdale down to Lakeport on the shore of Lake Okeechobee. The creek is the reason it is protected: it is the last free-flowing tributary left feeding Lake Okeechobee, coming off the southern end of the Lake Wales Ridge and threading through ancient cypress the whole way.
The Ortona mounds were raised more than 3,000 years ago, which puts them in the same era as the Miami Circle and well before the Calusa, who later occupied and added to the site. What the people here built was not only mounds but a system of canals through the marsh, cut so canoes could move through the settlement, and that engineering is what the site is known for.
It sits just south of the Brighton Seminole Indian Reservation and it lives off the lake. In the railroad years it was called the fish capital of Florida and the fishing is still why most people come.
Moore Haven sits on the Caloosahatchee River on U.S. 27, at the point where the Okeechobee Waterway crosses Florida from coast to coast. The town was founded in 1915 by James A. Moore and became the main commercial center for the whole Lake Okeechobee region.
