Moore Haven Riverwalk

Glades County · South Florida & the Keys

A walk along the 1918 seawall at Moore Haven, with finger piers to fish from and barges passing on the Okeechobee Waterway.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Moore Haven sits on the Caloosahatchee River on U.S. 27, at the point where the Okeechobee Waterway crosses Florida from coast to coast. The town was founded in 1915 by James A. Moore and became the main commercial center for the whole Lake Okeechobee region. The Riverwalk runs along the original seawall, built in 1918, and it is where the town meets its water: finger piers to fish from, picnic pavilions, and a clear view of the boats and barges working through. The Moore Haven Lock and Dam of 1935, run by the Army Corps of Engineers, is close by, and watching vessels lock through on the 152-mile waterway is something people stop to do. Two other landmarks stand nearby. The Glades County Courthouse of 1926 is Classical Revival and is in the National Register of Historic Places. The Lone Cypress, called the Sentinel Cypress, stood as a navigation mark for boats crossing Lake Okeechobee before there were charts and channel markers. The Chalo Nitka Festival, running since 1949, brings rodeo and Seminole heritage into the town every March
