Evergreen county experiences
Use enduring natural, historic and cultural places to understand the area beyond a real-estate showing.
Lake Talquin is not a natural lake. It was made when the Jackson Bluff Dam was built across the Ochlockonee River, and the hydroelectric plant there still helps supply Tallahassee. The state park on its shore sits west of the city at 14850 Jack Vause Landing Road, with the entrance off State Road 20 near Fort Braden.
Quincy was laid out in 1828, the same year Governor William Duval brought Cuban tobacco to Florida. What grew out of that was shade tobacco, the leaf used to wrap fine cigars, and only this part of Florida and the Connecticut River Valley could grow it well.
The Gadsden Arts Center and Museum began in 1989 as Art in Gadsden, a juried exhibition put together by the local artist Beth Appleton and her husband David Harbaugh. It was incorporated as the Gadsden Arts Center in 1994, took on its first executive director, Zoe Golloway, in 1997, and has been led by Grace Robinson since 2005.
Chattahoochee River Landing Park sits on the east bank of the Apalachicola River at 269 River Landing Road, just below the Jim Woodruff Dam. It is run by the city of Chattahoochee and it is free.
Havana was incorporated in 1906 and named for what it grew. Shade tobacco, used to wrap fine cigars, would only do well in two places in the United States: this part of north Florida and the Connecticut River Valley.
The Leaf Theater was built in Quincy in 1949 and named for the shade tobacco that made the town's money. Roy Rogers hosted the grand opening. It had air conditioning and a cry room for parents with babies, and, as was the practice then, separate segregated entrances.
Bear Creek Educational Forest lies just south of Quincy at 8125 Pat Thomas Parkway, off State Road 267, about half an hour from Tallahassee. It covers 492 acres inside the Lake Talquin State Forest and exists to teach rather than simply to be walked, with free guided programs run by the Florida Forest Service.
Pat Thomas Park, which older maps and local people still call Hopkins Landing, sits on the shore of Lake Talquin at 949 Hopkins Landing Road near Quincy. It is a Gadsden County park and it is built around the water.
