An accredited art museum in a 1912 hardware store on the Quincy square, showing 14 to 18 exhibitions a year.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Gadsden Arts Center and Museum began in 1989 as Art in Gadsden, a juried exhibition put together by the local artist Beth Appleton and her husband David Harbaugh. It was incorporated as the Gadsden Arts Center in 1994, took on its first executive director, Zoe Golloway, in 1997, and has been led by Grace Robinson since 2005. The building is the Bell and Bates Hardware Store of about 1912, on the historic square in Quincy, where the hardware business ran for 85 years. Mark and Patsy Bates gave the building to the center in 1997, and 1.4 million dollars in private donations paid for the renovation that turned a store into galleries. A further expansion finished in 2018 added the ArtZone drop-in studio and brought the building to six exhibition spaces, which now carry between 14 and 18 exhibitions a year. On March 1, 2016, the museum was accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, something only a small share of American museums hold, and added the word Museum to its name. It stands at 13 North Madison Street
