Evergreen county experiences
Use enduring natural, historic and cultural places to understand the area beyond a real-estate showing.
Ichetucknee Springs State Park lies about four miles northwest of Fort White, and the state park service gives its size as 2,669 acres. Eight major springs rise inside the park and join to form the Ichetucknee River, which runs six miles to the Santa Fe.
Florida does not have many waterfalls, and this is one of them. Falling Creek drops over a limestone ledge in a wooded ravine north of Lake City, then keeps going downstream over boulders. The drop is given as ten feet by one source and about twelve by another.
The Lake City-Columbia County Historical Museum sits at 157 Southeast Hernando Avenue in downtown Lake City, in a house the museum dates to the 1870s. The building is known as the May Vinzant Perkins House.
Osceola National Forest covers roughly 190,932 acres between Lake City and Jacksonville, reaching into Columbia, Baker, Bradford and Hamilton counties. President Herbert Hoover proclaimed it a national forest on July 10, 1931, and named it for the Seminole leader Osceola.
Alligator Lake Recreation Area covers about a thousand acres of wetland at 420 Southeast Alligator Glen, on the edge of Lake City. It is a county park, and the county counts twelve miles of hiking and biking trails across it; Florida Hikes measures up to 8.7 miles of walking.
Lake DeSoto sits in historic downtown Lake City at 498 Northeast Lake DeSoto Circle, and the city says plainly that it has been a gathering place for locals and visitors for many years. A walking path runs around it with benches facing the water, which is what most people use it for on an ordinary day.
O'Leno State Park lies on the upper Santa Fe River about six miles north of High Springs on U.S. 441, in Columbia County. Its strangest feature is what the river does: it drops into a sinkhole inside the park, runs underground, shows itself in sinkholes scattered through a cypress floodplain, and comes back to the surface roughly three and a half miles south at River Rise Preserve State Park.
Rum Island Park is at 1447 Southwest Rum Island Terrace in Fort White, and it is run by Columbia County. It is not large, and what brings people is the meeting of two waters: the spring here runs clear, and the Santa Fe River beside it runs dark with tannin, so the line where they mix is easy to see from the bank.
The Lake Isabella Historic Residential District covers 40 acres southeast of downtown Lake City, taking in all or part of thirty blocks. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1993, and holds 145 historic buildings.
