Lake Isabella Historic District
Columbia County · North Florida & First Coast
A neighborhood of 145 historic houses around a lake southeast of downtown Lake City, listed in the National Register since 1993.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The Lake Isabella Historic Residential District covers 40 acres southeast of downtown Lake City, taking in all or part of thirty blocks. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1993, and holds 145 historic buildings. The district is bounded by East, Duval and Columbia Streets, Baya Avenue, Church Street and Lake Isabella itself, and a visitor usually starts where Southeast Hernando Avenue meets Southeast Camp Street. What makes it worth a slow drive or a walk is the concentration: house after house built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, following the national architectural fashions of their day rather than anything peculiar to Florida. Peterson Hall, put up in 1906 for William and Gertrude Peterson, is among them. The neighborhood filled in because of where it sits. Families wanted the lake in front of them and the downtown shops a short walk behind, and that combination made these blocks the address to have while Lake City was growing. The houses have stayed in use, so this is a lived-in neighborhood rather than a preserved site, and there is no gate, no ticket and no visitor center
