The county's museum fills the May Vinzant Perkins House, an 1870s home in downtown Lake City.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Lake City-Columbia County Historical Museum sits at 157 Southeast Hernando Avenue in downtown Lake City, in a house the museum dates to the 1870s. The building is known as the May Vinzant Perkins House. Its rear single-story section is thought to be older than the Civil War, with the two-story front added later, most likely by Vinzant. John Vinzant Jr. bought the house after the war. The museum was set up as a nonprofit in 1985 and is run by a board of directors rather than by the county. Inside, the rooms are given over to what the county has kept: Civil War material, including the Blue-Grey Army collection in a room of its own, the Vinzant and Perkins family collection, and a kitchen fitted out as it would have been in the early 1900s. Staff also help visitors with genealogy, which is much of what brings people through the door in a county this old. Guided tours are offered. The museum opens Thursday and Saturday from 10 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon, and closes for the month of October, when it stages a historical drama in the house instead
