Falling Creek Falls

Columbia County · North Florida & First Coast

A tea-colored waterfall in deep woods north of Lake City, reached by a short accessible boardwalk.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Florida does not have many waterfalls, and this is one of them. Falling Creek drops over a limestone ledge in a wooded ravine north of Lake City, then keeps going downstream over boulders. The drop is given as ten feet by one source and about twelve by another. The water is the color of strong tea, stained by tannins out of the swamps upstream, and how hard it falls depends entirely on how much rain has come lately. The site covers 204 acres and is managed jointly by the Suwannee River Water Management District and Columbia County. It opened to the public in October 2001, after the district bought the land from the Parker and Hogan families. A 0.6-mile loop runs from the parking area, built as a boardwalk that is accessible to wheelchairs, winding through a bluff forest of cypress, sweetgum and magnolia to an observation platform above the falls, with more than one place to stand and look. A path loops further upstream through the woods, passing what is left of the old settlement at Falling Creek. There are restrooms, picnic tables and a playground at the trailhead. There is no charge to come in. Dogs are not allowed here
