Evergreen county experiences

The dike was thrown up by the Army Corps of Engineers after the hurricanes of 1926 and 1928 drowned the farming settlements on the south shore, and it stands about thirty-five feet above the land. Walking or riding along the crest puts a person higher than anything else for miles, with the lake on one side and cane fields, pasture and small towns on the other.
This is the largest tract of Florida dry prairie left, a habitat shaped by flood and fire that once covered much of the peninsula and now survives in fragments; it forms part of the headwaters of the Everglades. The Florida grasshopper sparrow lives here, one of the most endangered birds in North America, along with crested caracaras and burrowing owls.
Colonel Zachary Taylor brought about eleven hundred men here, a thousand regulars from three infantry regiments and a hundred and thirty-two Missouri volunteers. Waiting for him were roughly four hundred Seminole warriors under Abiaka, Billy Bowlegs, Halpatter Tustenuggee, known as Alligator, and Wild Cat, dug in behind a belt of sawgrass and mud that the soldiers had to wade.
The name is Hitchiti, from oki meaning water and chubi meaning big. For its size it is remarkably shallow, averaging about nine feet, which is why the wind can move it so violently. In 1926 the Great Miami hurricane broke the original levee and killed around three hundred people; in 1928 the Okeechobee hurricane pushed the lake over the settlements on the south shore and the National Weather Service revised the death toll in 2003 to at least twenty-five hundred.
It is a piece of water engineering that happens to be one of the better birding spots in the county. Water running off the cattle ranches north of the lake carries phosphorus, and phosphorus is what feeds the algal blooms; these man-made marshes slow the water down and let the plants take the phosphorus out before it reaches Lake Okeechobee.
The schoolhouse is the reason to come. It was built in 1907, before Okeechobee County existed, and it has been kept as a one-room school of that period rather than converted into gallery space, so the desks, the stove and the board are where they were.
