Okeechobee Historical Society Museum
Okeechobee County · Central Florida
The county museum at 1850 US Highway 98 North, with a 1907 schoolhouse standing beside it.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
The schoolhouse is the reason to come. It was built in 1907, before Okeechobee County existed, and it has been kept as a one-room school of that period rather than converted into gallery space, so the desks, the stove and the board are where they were. In the museum next to it are artifacts and displays covering the first settlers, the cattle families who worked this prairie, and the native peoples who were here long before them, which in this part of Florida means the Seminole, pushed south into the lake country by the wars of the 1830s. The society is run by volunteers and opens on Thursdays from ten in the morning until one, with other days arranged for clubs and organized groups on request. Telephone 863-763-4344 before driving out. For anyone thinking of moving to Okeechobee, this is the shortest explanation of why a cattle town sits on the edge of a lake
