ABOUT THIS PLACE

This is the largest tract of Florida dry prairie left, a habitat shaped by flood and fire that once covered much of the peninsula and now survives in fragments; it forms part of the headwaters of the Everglades. The Florida grasshopper sparrow lives here, one of the most endangered birds in North America, along with crested caracaras and burrowing owls. In 2016 DarkSky International certified it as an International Dark Sky Park, the first in the state, because it sits three hours from the seven million people of South Florida with nothing between, and on a clear moonless night the Milky Way is visible without any optical help. More than a hundred miles of trail are open to walkers, cyclists and riders, with no motor vehicles allowed on them. The campground has thirty-five combined sites, four tent sites, three primitive sites and five glamping units, with paddocks for horses. The gate opens at eight and closes at sundown
