This does not look like Florida. Logan Hill, the high point, stands some three hundred feet above the river, and between it and the water the ground falls away in steephead ravines cut by seeping groundwater, holding plants more usually found in the Appalachians.
Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed it on May 13, 1936, and the ranger district offices are at Bristol and Crawfordville. Inside it are interior swamps, longleaf pine flatwoods, titi thickets and part of the Woodville Karst Plain, drained by the Sopchoppy, the Ochlockonee and the Apalachicola.
Jason Gregory, a planter in what was then Calhoun County, built it at Ocheesee Landing on the far bank of the Apalachicola, raised on brick pillars five feet high so the seasonal floods passed underneath. Confederate officers called on the family during the Civil War, and the house was used for a time to hold casualties from the explosion aboard the CSS Chattahoochee.
It was founded in 2001 and belongs to the Liberty County Board of County Commissioners, with an advisory council of volunteers appointed in 2014 to run it day to day. Two trains work the line.
