Veterans Memorial Railroad

Liberty County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A miniature railroad in Veterans Memorial Park at Bristol, run by volunteers for the county.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It was founded in 2001 and belongs to the Liberty County Board of County Commissioners, with an advisory council of volunteers appointed in 2014 to run it day to day. Two trains work the line. One is a restored Century Flyer built by the National Amusement Device company in the 1950s; the other is a coal-fired Crown live steam locomotive of two-foot gauge, described as the only one operating in a public park anywhere in Florida. The track was originally two thousand seven hundred feet and another three thousand five hundred feet was added between 2007 and 2009. A ride runs about eighteen to twenty minutes over roughly a mile. Public runs are held on the second Saturday of the month, free with donations welcome, and private bookings take thirty to thirty-five passengers. The railroad's own page has been showing it closed for trestle repairs, so telephone 850-643-6646 before driving out. The park around it has a playground, a covered pavilion, a basketball court, restrooms and a paved mile of walking path
