The Panhandle Pioneer Settlement at Blountstown is eighteen historic buildings, restored and open to the public, gathered onto one site so that a rural Florida community can be walked through rather than read about. The oldest is the Chason Cabin from the 1820s, followed by the Wells Cabin of 1846 and the Bailey Log Home from about 1860.
The Apalachicola runs about 160 miles from Lake Seminole at Chattahoochee down to Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf, and Blountstown sits on its bank. Its basin covers roughly 19,500 square miles. The lower thirty miles are swamp and wetland, with large tracts of floodplain forest, and where the river meets the bay it creates more than 230,000 acres of delta at varying salinity, tidal marsh and seagrass meadow, set aside as a research reserve.
Sam Atkins Park is the town's recreation ground at Blountstown, with a large parking area beside the baseball diamonds, restrooms, and accessible parking and restrooms. It opens daily from sunrise to sunset. Behind the playing fields the ground turns into something else: two viewing structures on a small pond and a boardwalk through swamp on the north side, with pine around the perimeter and woodland trails carrying on into the neighboring Panhandle Pioneer Settlement.
The Chipola River begins in Jackson County where Marshall Creek meets Cowarts Creek, and runs 92.5 miles south to join the Apalachicola. It is a spring river rather than a rain river, and that is what makes it different from most water in the panhandle.
The Blountstown Greenway is 3.4 paved miles laid along an old railroad bed, running from the trailhead at State Road 71 south through the middle of Blountstown to Neal Landing on the Apalachicola River, where a wooden overlook gives out over the water. A 0.7-mile spur climbs away to Sam Atkins Park and the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, which adds 1.4 miles there and back through the Sutton Creek floodplain.
The M&B Railroad Memorial Park sits on Main Street North in Blountstown and remembers the Marianna and Blountstown line that once ran through the town. A historic locomotive stands in the park, and the old depot near the town center has been turned into a public space with a railroad museum in it.
