Blountstown Greenway Bike Path

Calhoun County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A paved 3.4-mile path on an old railroad bed, running through town to an overlook on the Apalachicola River.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Blountstown Greenway is 3.4 paved miles laid along an old railroad bed, running from the trailhead at State Road 71 south through the middle of Blountstown to Neal Landing on the Apalachicola River, where a wooden overlook gives out over the water. A 0.7-mile spur climbs away to Sam Atkins Park and the Panhandle Pioneer Settlement, which adds 1.4 miles there and back through the Sutton Creek floodplain. For 1.8 miles the greenway doubles as the Florida National Scenic Trail. Along the way are benches, playgrounds, picnic areas, a pollinator garden of native plants, a wooden boardwalk and a steam locomotive on display. That locomotive is number 444 of the Marianna and Blountstown Railroad, and it stands on the exact line of the old roadbed. The railroad it commemorates carried long-leaf pine lumber, farm produce, mail and building materials, and ran passenger service until 1929. The greenway is flat the whole way, being a rail bed, so it suits a bicycle with a child on it or a walker who does not want hills. Neal Landing at the southern end puts you on the Apalachicola River itself, and the overlook there is the reason many people ride the whole length rather than turn back
