WATER & COAST

WaterColor

Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A planned community of 499 acres next to Seaside, developed by the St. Joe Company.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Cooper, Robertson and Partners laid it out, and the plan wraps around Western Lake, the coastal dune lake that also runs through Grayton Beach State Park. That lake is the feature the whole place is built to face. The architecture is coastal Southern rather than the strict white of Alys Beach or the dark stucco of Rosemary: shingled and painted houses with porches, set along streets and around a series of parks. The town center sits close to Seaside, and the two run together on foot, so a visitor staying in one walks through the other without noticing a boundary. A boathouse on Western Lake rents kayaks, canoes and paddleboards for use on the lake. The St. Joe Company was the largest private landowner in this part of Florida and turned a timber holding into towns; WaterColor is one of the results. For anyone looking at property along 30A, it is one of the four names that comes up first, with Seaside, Rosemary and Alys
