WATER & COAST

Lake DeFuniak

Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

A spring-fed lake of about forty acres in the middle of DeFuniak Springs, and very nearly a true circle.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It measures 1,580 feet at its longest and 1,510 feet at its widest, which is as close to round as a natural lake gets. It is said to be one of only two almost exactly circular spring-fed lakes in the world. Average depth is about six feet, but it drops to seventy-four feet at the deepest point, which is the spring itself. Circle Drive runs all the way around the shore and is a mile and a bit on foot, level and shaded, and it is what people in town walk in the evening. The whole ring is the DeFuniak Springs Historic District: Victorian houses, the old Chautauqua auditorium, churches and the Walton-DeFuniak Library facing the water. The lake is the center of the town in the literal sense, not the figurative one, and it is why the railroad company put the town here in the 1880s. Fishing and paddling are allowed. There is no fee and nothing to buy a ticket for
