Camp Creek Lake
Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
About seventy acres of coastal dune lake at Seacrest, running under 30A down to WaterSound Beach.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
It starts at the northern edge of Deer Lake State Park, crosses beneath Scenic Highway 30A, and ends at the Gulf. Public access is at a county easement on Camp Creek Road North. Camp Creek is one of fifteen named coastal dune lakes strung along this stretch of Walton County coast, from Fuller Lake in the west to Lake Powell in the east. They are about ten thousand years old, formed when wind moved sand into shallow basins, and most of them average only about five feet deep. What makes them rare is the outfall. After heavy rain the lake cuts through the sand bar to the Gulf, fresh water runs out, salt water pushes back in, and the mix creates a brackish system that holds both freshwater and saltwater species at once. Outside of South Walton, the same kind of lake is found only in New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar. Paddling on it is quiet, with houses on the banks and the Gulf just over the dune
