WATER & COAST
Grayton Beach State Park
Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast
More than two thousand acres on both sides of County Road 30A, at 357 Main Park Road in Santa Rosa Beach.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
This is one of the few places on the South Walton coast where no house and no building comes up to the dune line, so what you see from the sand is what was here before anyone built anything. Western Lake sits behind the dunes and is a coastal dune lake, a kind of water body found in only a handful of places on earth. It fills with fresh water, then breaks through the sand to the Gulf during heavy rain and takes salt water back in, which is why the plants and fish in it are unusual. The campground has fifty-nine sites with water and power, some with sewer, taking recreational vehicles up to fifty feet. Thirty two-bedroom cabins with gas fireplaces sit separately near Alligator Lake. Short walking trails loop through the dunes and pine woods, and the Western Lake Trail connects into Point Washington State Forest. The paved Timpoochee Trail runs eighteen miles along 30A past the entrance. Open eight in the morning to sunset
