WATER & COAST

Rosemary Beach

Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

107 acres at the eastern end of 30A, laid out in 1995 by the architects who designed Seaside.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Duany Plater-Zyberk planned it, and the look is different from anything else on this coast: cobblestone streets, deep overhangs, dark wood and stucco, courtyards, and influences drawn from the French Quarter, the Caribbean and old coastal towns further south. About seven hundred people live here. Pocket parks are worked into the plan so that no house is far from open green, and the streets are narrow on purpose to slow cars down. The town center holds shops, restaurants and a small square, and it is open to anyone who walks in. The boardwalks over the dunes to the Gulf are gated for owners and guests, so a visitor who wants the beach uses one of the county public accesses along 30A instead. It is the last of the 30A towns before the Walton County line, and it is close enough to Alys Beach that people walk between the two on the paved Timpoochee Trail
