HISTORY & HERITAGE

Paynes Creek Historic State Park

On July 17, 1849, five renegade Seminoles attacked the Kennedy-Darling trading post near what is now Bowling Green, killed Captain George Payne and Dempsey Whidden, and burned the store and everything in it. Settlers demanded protection, and the army built Fort Chokonikla on October 26 that year, three months after the attack.

MUSEUM & CULTURE

Cracker Trail Museum

The Cracker Trail Museum opened in 1967 and sits at 2822 Museum Drive in Zolfo Springs, inside Pioneer Park. It holds over 4,000 items from pioneer-era Florida. Some are in glass cases and some are set out on the floor arranged the way they would have stood in a house or a workshop, so a visitor walks through rooms rather than past a wall of labels.

PARKS & OUTDOORS

Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park sits at the northwest corner of U.S. 17 and State Road 64 in Zolfo Springs, with the Peace River along its north and west sides. Inside it are three things that would each be worth a stop on their own.

FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE

Solomon's Castle

Howard Solomon bought 40 acres of swamp near Ona in 1972 and spent seven years building a castle on it while his family lived in a trailer. He was a sculptor, and he was called the DaVinci of Debris for what he made out of things other people threw away.

WATER & COAST

Hardee Lakes Park

Hardee Lakes County Park covers 1,200 acres at 5502 Ollie Roberts Road near Bowling Green. The lakes here are not natural. They are worked-out phosphate pits alongside the floodplain of Paynes Creek, dug from the 1950s onward, reclaimed and then donated to the county by Mosaic.
