Cracker Trail Museum

Hardee County · Central Florida

Over 4,000 pieces of pioneer Florida in one county museum at Zolfo Springs, every one tagged with the name of the family who gave it.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The Cracker Trail Museum opened in 1967 and sits at 2822 Museum Drive in Zolfo Springs, inside Pioneer Park. It holds over 4,000 items from pioneer-era Florida. Some are in glass cases and some are set out on the floor arranged the way they would have stood in a house or a workshop, so a visitor walks through rooms rather than past a wall of labels. The detail that makes this museum different from most is the tagging. Every artifact carries a description and the name of the person or family who donated it, and the county keeps the whole lot in a database, so somebody can come in and ask what their grandmother gave and be told. In a county this size that matters, because most of the donors are local families and many of their descendants still live here. The name comes from the Florida Cracker Trail, the old cattle route across the state. The museum opens Monday through Friday from 8 in the morning to 5, closing over lunch. Admission is small. Picnic shelters, a pavilion and a hall on the site can be rented for events
