Pioneer Park

Hardee County · Central Florida

A county park on the Peace River at Zolfo Springs holding an 1879 cabin, an 1897 blacksmith shop, a 1914 locomotive and a campground under old oaks.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Pioneer Park sits at the northwest corner of U.S. 17 and State Road 64 in Zolfo Springs, with the Peace River along its north and west sides. Inside it are three things that would each be worth a stop on their own. Pioneer Village holds restored buildings brought here and put back together: the Hart Cabin of 1879, an 1897 blacksmith shop, a smokehouse, wagons from the 1880s, an 1886 post office with its outhouse, and a 1914 locomotive. The Cracker Trail Museum stands in the same grounds. A corner of the park is given over to a wildlife refuge. There is also a manmade lake of 8.5 acres for fishing, a boat ramp onto the Peace River, and a 1.1-mile trail through the river floodplain and along the bluffs above it. Camping runs in two areas, a newer section for recreational vehicles and an older riverside camp under old oaks, and sites cannot be booked ahead. A recreation pavilion built by the WPA in 1935 still stands. Hurricane Charley tore through here on August 13, 2004, and not everything it damaged was rebuilt. The park opens at 7 in the morning until 6, entry is free, leashed dogs are welcome and swimming is not allowed
