Evergreen county experiences
Use enduring natural, historic and cultural places to understand the area beyond a real-estate showing.
The Arcadia Historic District takes in roughly 3,400 acres and 293 historic buildings, bounded by Lee and Mills Avenues and Imogene, Cypress, Pine and Magnolia Streets. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 1984.
The Peace River begins near Bartow in Polk County, where Saddle Creek meets the Peace Creek Drainage Canal, and runs 76 miles southwest to Charlotte Harbor at Punta Gorda. Its drainage basin covers about 2,300 square miles and takes in nearly all of DeSoto and Hardee counties.
Morgan Park sits at 1100 West Hickory Street, a short way west of downtown Arcadia, and covers 240 acres along the Peace River. About three miles of connected loop trails run through it. The North Trail is paved in concrete with rest stops along the way, so it suits anyone who wants an easy walk or needs a firm surface.
The DeSoto County Historical Society keeps its museum at 300 North Monroe Avenue in Arcadia, in the John Morgan Ingraham House. Robert Early Whidden, a cattleman and businessman, built the house in the late 1800s.
Brownville Park lies at 1885 Northeast Brownville Street, about half a mile north of Arcadia, on 75 acres in the Peace River floodplain. A half-mile nature loop walks easily under live oak canopy, with river views and limestone ledges and small spring-fed streams showing the karst ground underneath.
The first Arcadia rodeo was held in 1928 to raise money for the local American Legion post's new building, and it began the way these things usually begin: ranch families competing to see whose cowboys could ride and rope. It has been held ever since, which its organizers say makes it the oldest and the largest rodeo in Florida.
Canoe Outpost-Peace River has been putting people on this river since the 1970s and is now in its third generation of the same family. The stretch of the Peace between Zolfo Springs and Arcadia, about 31.5 miles of it, is the part suited to canoes and kayaks: slow current, tea-colored water, live oaks hung with Spanish moss and cypress along the banks.
Peace River Charters works out of Arcadia and covers the river several different ways. The airboat tours are the main business, running over 20 miles of river with a guide pointing out what lives along it: alligators, turtles, wading birds and whatever else is out that day.
