Peace River Charters works out of Arcadia and covers the river several different ways. The airboat tours are the main business, running over 20 miles of river with a guide pointing out what lives along it: alligators, turtles, wading birds and whatever else is out that day. The swamp buggy rides go where the boat cannot, up on a raised platform through deep mud, brush, uneven ground and shallow water, which puts passengers close to wildlife on land rather than on the water. Horseback trail rides last about an hour and follow the riverbank and the cypress hammocks behind it. The company also rents canoes for three-mile and six-mile day runs and for overnight camping trips on the river, where the current is slow enough to suit people who have not paddled much. There is charter fishing as well, run with a jet tunnel outboard built for shallow water and aimed at inshore sportfish. Trips can be taken privately for four people or fewer, as a group, or built into longer custom packages that combine fishing, camping and fossil hunting over more than one day.
