PARKS & OUTDOORS

Point Washington State Forest

Walton County · Panhandle & Emerald Coast

15,131 acres of pine woods in southern Walton County, bought under the state conservation program in 1992.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

It is the back country behind the beach towns, and it is the reason the coast here still has a green edge rather than running straight into subdivision. US Highway 98 is the main road through it, and it borders Topsail Hill Preserve, Grayton Beach and Deer Lake state parks, so the protected ground joins up rather than sitting in separate blocks. The Eastern Lake Trail system is the main way in on foot or by bicycle: three stacked loops that come to about 10.9 miles altogether, so you can walk a short one or the whole thing. The Longleaf Trail runs about four and a half miles out, nine there and back. The ground is wet pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub and cypress ponds, and the low sections hold water after rain, so boots matter more than shoes. Hunting is allowed in season and horses and bicycles share the tracks. There is no entrance fee and no gate
