James E. Grey Preserve

Pasco County · Gulf Coast

Eighty acres of river frontage inside New Port Richey, with a boardwalk along the Pithlachascotee and an accessible kayak launch.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

The preserve takes up 80 acres at 6938 Plathe Road, close to downtown New Port Richey, which makes it unusual: this is genuine river bottom rather than a landscaped park, and it sits inside the city. The Pithlachascotee River, known locally as the Cotee, runs through it. A quiet boardwalk follows the water through cypress and hardwood, and unpaved trails run back through the uplands. The kayak launch is built to be accessible, and the Pithlachascotee is a designated state paddling trail, so a boat put in here can run down toward the Gulf. The preserve is a site on the Great Florida Birding Trail. There is a playground with four shaded picnic tables and grills, and restrooms. Pets are not allowed anywhere on the property, which catches people out. It is run by the City of New Port Richey rather than the county. For a place this close to a town center it is remarkably quiet on a weekday morning
