Historic Downtown Dade City

Pasco County · Gulf Coast

The county seat of Pasco, a small inland town of brick storefronts and old houses that the interstate never reached.

ABOUT THIS PLACE

Dade City sits in the hills of east Pasco County, well away from the Gulf beaches and the Tampa sprawl, and it has kept a downtown of the kind most Florida towns lost. The Pasco County courthouse stands at the middle of it, and the streets around hold brick commercial buildings, antique shops, restaurants and a working main street rather than a restored one. The Church Street Historic District runs along Church Street between 9th and 17th Streets, fourteen acres holding 34 historic buildings and one structure, and it went on the National Register of Historic Places on August 21, 1997. Development along that street began in 1890. Among the buildings are the First Presbyterian Church, the Platt House and the old Water Works. The surrounding country is citrus and cattle, and the Kumquat Festival each winter is the town's own event rather than a tourist one. Saint Leo Abbey stands a few miles away. It is about forty minutes from Tampa and feels considerably further
