Monument of States

A step pyramid in downtown Kissimmee built in 1943 out of 1,500 stones sent from every state and a good part of the world.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Doctor Charles W. Bressler-Pettis, a retired physician who headed the Kissimmee All-States Tourist Club, built this with J. C. Fisher in 1943. The idea was a monument to national unity in wartime, made of pieces sent from everywhere. He wrote to governors and collected from businesses, residents and travelers, and added thousands of rocks he had picked up on his own journeys. President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a stone from his New York estate. The finished pyramid holds about 1,500 stones and objects and weighs something near 100,000 pounds, and Senator Claude Pepper dedicated it in 1943. It fell into neglect after Walt Disney World opened in 1971 and the highway traffic stopped coming through downtown. The city re-dedicated it and sealed a time capsule inside on March 28, 1993, and the American Automobile Association helped restore it in 2001. It went on the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 2015. It stands at 300 East Monument Avenue
