FLORIDA PLACE TO EXPLORE
Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament
Osceola County · Central Florida
The first Medieval Times castle built in the United States, open in Kissimmee since 1983, with jousting knights and a meal eaten by hand.
ABOUT THIS PLACE
Jose Montaner worked out the format in Spain in the late 1960s, and the Spanish investment group Manver brought it to Florida, opening this castle on December 16, 1983, near Walt Disney World. It was the first in the country and the others followed from it. The show is set among eleventh-century Spanish and French kingdoms. Knights ride into a central arena for games, sword fighting and jousting, with the audience seated in tiers around the sand and divided into sections that cheer for their own knight. Andalusian horses do the riding, and a performer needs roughly two months of horsemanship and six to eight months of combat and acting work before appearing. Dinner is served while the tournament runs and is eaten without cutlery, which the servers explain as a point of period accuracy and children treat as permission. It runs about two hours. The castle sits on West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway on the Kissimmee tourist strip
